How does he know if this was a fresh trade or a square off trade? Or a hedge? Many different combos...

Journalists getting too lazy these days quoting tweets from random guys online...

Maybe the order was placed through the algo trader.

I didn't pay much attention to the algos when I visited Fintech last year, but a superficial visit tells you that all these algo traders allow the flexibility of manual input of orders or manual confirmation of the generated orders.

It's possible as an expiry lottery. You can see that in Banknifty expiry almost every week. I think that if you check the sensex options (I don't watch those) on Friday noon, you will see 2-3 different moves every week in the last 30 minutes.
