In my opinion , something historical will be required to happen for india as state to change and reform which is coming in next 10-15 years until then dn't expect much. Personally i would never support population law.
Foreign institutional operators are betting on our demographic advantage... population, low penetration of everything that makes life easy better.... If population control is brought in or thought of...it would be bad for market

No population control means.... No potable water for the coming generation, expensive housing, Shortage of Food grains, Higher crude imports, massive deforestation and dwindling wildlife, outbreak of diseases like nipah virus etc etc. This list is long. If we start today, it will take us another 20 years before we can see optimal levels of population.

I agree with vikas that forcing people may not be the best way. But government could give incentive to people who follow population guidelines.

@iwillwin I dont think population control means reducing the numbers by half:p India will still have the demographic advantage. Only that the rate of population growth has to slow down. Now Indians are busy making kids by the dozen. That needs to stop. Moreover we dont have to care about foreign Institutions/stock markets. We have to do what is best for our people in the long term. That means water, education, health care etc. All of it this can be done without any FII involvement. We have enough resources to fend for ourselves.

I feel the citizens who are responsible and have realized importance of good upbringing of future generations are already doing their bit by having 1 kid or 2 kids at max....let it be a girl child only....I have colleague and friends who have just 1 girl kid and they are happier...so times are changing for good....
I believe and hope more and more janta realizes this...the better it is

population control law is a must. but not possible because india is not a homogeneous country. not only different religions but also differen caste, creed langua. if a govt proposes law the oppostion will try to strike fear among the minoritites not only on religion, but minority caste language as well.
i think its the main reason why no government has courage to do it

if india was a homogeneous society we would have grown like anything with higher rates.
now only solution to this is education and awareness about poplation. but it will take a long time and india would already be suffered. so some one needs to bit the bullet law is must.

Going to fail . i am trying to avoid to write inconvenient truths here but let me just say, don't rule out demand for another partition.

Rude awakening awaits these people. Demographic is density.
