Averaging.. The closing price is the average traded price after 3 pm (or maybe 3.15 pm)... that's why though the price was 6168 at 3.30, it averaged to 6178 because of the fall in last 10-15 min.

and the rationale behind that >> opeartors may tend to spke price with vol at very last min, rather second and then exercize options.
Eg- They will shortlist relatively easy scrip for suh case.Say ABS. Then say buy huge qty ITM or slight OTM CE/PE. Then verl last seconds jack up cash price to their favourable direction.If this jacked up price is taken as close, they will be exercize their options.
This may be one of the reason for taking avg price as closing on all days and imp settlement day.
Earlier prior dec2010, stock options were american style.

but for other threads, it's diffi to remember their name as well as section in which they are posted. If u feeel the content of the thread is worth reading and posts in that thread are not frequent, u better subscribe to it.
