Experiments in Technical Analysis

Hi Gaurav,

The function "PlotText" is not supported in 4.7 but only supported in 4.8. Timebeing u can comment of the two lines that uses PlotText in the AFL file by using // at the start of the line.

By Commenting off, u wont be able to see the text "buy and Sell" at the arrows. Still it works without these 2lines code. Meanwhile we will try to see, how to fix it.

As we discussed I tried to improve the system by incorporating ADX. Following is the study...................

Dear Karthik!

Thanks for taking so much pain to try out ADX alongwith the system. You have rightly suggested that using some other techniques may be better. Perhaps manual analysis after screening on the basis of indicator may prove better.

As far I know the Pro version should be able to read intraday data. The other version which they call a EOD version cannot read the intraday data.

I use only the EOD charts as I am a positional trader. Hope others can help you on this.

Thanks for pointing this out. It will be very nice if you can post the revised afl file so that non techies also can use it .

Thanks

We will investigate other possibilities of reducing the whipsaws. Also a visual inspection of the charts is very important. Please, never go by the mechanical scan alone. Use the scan only to shortlist the stocks. No software can be better than the human mind.

Hi Ashish

As per your request we did a study of using ADX to improve the MABIUTS system. Of course the result was not encouraging as reported earlier. I did further analysis. I tried to use one of Tushar Chandes lesser known indicator RAVI (Range action verification Index. Looks like he had a penchant for Sanskrit names, Aroon, Vidya etc.). RAVI like ADX helps to understand if the stock is trending or ranging. More on RAVI Indicator when we cover some interesting Trading systems of Tushar Chande.

Coming to the results it does help to avoid some whipsaws and like ADX does miss a few entries. Ofcourse like ADX when we increase the threshold value for trending verification more whipsaws are eliminated at the cost of more entry points. It is clear that in any system based on Moving averages there will be a tradeoff with whipsaws and catching the trend early. I am enclosing the chart for your reference.

Hi Ashish

Looking further into the same topic, using adaptive moving averages seems to eliminate some of the whipsaws without missing the good entry points.
I used a 13 day Adaptive Moving Average and the signal line remained the same exonential moving average. Enclosing the chart. Adaptive moving averages are more advanced topics and we will cover them in details in due course.

warm regards

Re: Experiments in Technical Analysis- WHIPSAWS.

Frm: Gandhiadg:

To:mr.karthikmarar And Senior Memebers:

Is It Possible To Minimize The Whipsaws If We Use Ma Based On The High And The Low Of The Daily Price Istead Of Close For Short As Well As Medium Term Trading.

If Someone Has Carried Out A Backtest Using Various Periods For Ma (based On Low And High) Then The Feedback Could Be Valuable.

Looking Forward For A Valuable Feedback.

Thks In Advance.
