Thought of posting a quick one. I was on the same page as you and agree that reservations should be made for deserving economically poor (based on relative merit) - but this should not be at the cost of denying the middle cast and economically relatively well off if they are deserving (based on merit)
Was having chai at a tapri today. And heard (an obviously Gujarati Patel) explaining to another... The grouse? Due to reservation policy, students scoring 45-50% marks get admission for medical or engineering colleges, where as students who have secured even 90% and above fail to get admission they well deserve as the seats are given to reserved categories. (not sure if the facts are true - but this is the perception in the Patel community in Gujarat)

My 2C.
Tomorrow Khannas, Shettys, Patils etc etc will come together and ask for reservations. Hope some good sense will prevail and such nuisance will be weeded out. Reservations if any should be given only to extremely poor people who are truly deserving and not based on any caste or creed.
