how to turn off symantec auto protect for a while?

whenever I try to run a patch for AB, symantec auto protect stops it as it it's a trojan horse.
I went to control panel, there in security option,there is only symantec liveupdate.
though there is an option of allowing a program thru windows vista firewall,but the patch is being stopped by symantec auto protect.

any suggestions how to run that patch

which version you are using tell me ,, or else there is option menu ..click on norton antivirus from right side of task bar then see there are options in that there is option to turn off AUTO protect
