in the year 1903 , under the british rule , there was a hotel named 'SWISS WATSON'....but only britishers were allowed entry.....feeling insulted , the late TATA group founder JAMSHED TATA , decided 2 build a hotel of that style where anyone would have access....& finally his dream came true...
the present TAJ HOTEL @ gateway of INDIA still stands tall even after a century wher lacs of britishers have also enjoyed a stay & r still doing so.....

If I am not mistaken...
Tata hired a french architect to design the building. After the design was over, he tabled the plan in bombay, and gave all plan details to the contractors and he left back by ship to france. When the present Taj was ready for inauguration, the architect came back, got shocked with the hotel, and shot himself (I am not sure whether he died here in India or back in France)
The reason..
The whole plan was changed upside down. The front of the hotel became the backside. Actually at present, the Back of the hotel faces the Gateway..
(This probably could be a myth... this story was told to us by the Front office manager at TAJ back in 1986)
