Stocks To Keep A Close Eye On

Yes, we have to wait for tomorrows closing before calling them "Morning bullish star". That is why I have mentioned "2nd day of ....". So these should be watched of they complete the pattern next day.

I have just started using Bollinger Bands(20,2) and I have this observation:
The candlestick pattern makes most sense when it is near the either Bollinger Bands.

Ex: Algorithmically, two candles may form bullish engulfing near the upper BB. But if you observe, price action does not move up later. Thus BB could save you from potentially failing candle chart signals.

Similarly, after today's (130709) closing, have a look at daily charts of JPASSO(BSE: 532532) and JPHYDRO(BSE: 532627). Both have pierced the lower BB and also formed the Hammer candle as well as 2nd day of bullish morning star. So if were to involve trader psychology, we could expect a breakout and revsersal with substantial volumes. Some may argue with the hammer candle because some sources(line Thomas Bulkowski) say that the lower shadow must be atleast twice the body.
Hi Bunny

Good that you brought the point forward. Even Steve Nison, the father of candlestick charting, tells that candlesticks should always be used with classical western indicators like moving averages and Bollinger Bands. Like a hammer at the critical support area marked by moving averages and bollinger bands becomes a potential reversal candidate.

Savant however talks of using 9,2 as the parameters of Bollinger Bands. I have seen too that this set of parameters works the best in Indian markets compared to the 20,2 one.

Savant please throw in your views.

This thing just clicked me. May be we should be use different values in different market conditions! Since it uses moving averages, its gonna lag for the first few days and overshoot in the last days. Price change faster under one condition and slower in others. Maybe I will try experimenting with different values :D

Hi Bunny,

For A Definite Reversal Point Setting Of 20,3 Should Work Better, Where You Will Have Less Frequency Of Upper & Lower BB Being Touched Or Pierced.

One May Plot It To See The Results For Different Stocks For Consistency.

Yep Sir, much less piercing, but frankly, I find it difficult with 20,3 setting.
BTW 13,2 looks much better and promising.

Hi Bunny
Thank you so much for this list. I feel that instead of relating the size of candle 1 to the size of candle 2, you'd get better results if you relate it to size of the previous day's candle. That is if you use some criteria like:

Size of candle 1 = (some multiple) x (size of candle on day 0)

I've gone through the charts of all the stocks outlined by you. The following looks good also from other perspectives:

CHAMBALFERT
INDIACEM
TORRENTPOWER

U.S. Stocks Advance, Led by Banks, as Whitney Says Buy Goldman

July 13 (Bloomberg) -- U.S. stocks rallied, sending the Standard & Poor’s 500 Index to its best gain in six weeks, as analyst Meredith Whitney recommended buying shares of Goldman Sachs Group Inc. and said banks may advance 15 percent.

Goldman Sachs climbed 5.3 percent as Whitney gave the firm the only “buy” rating among the eight companies she covers. Bank of America Corp. jumped 9.3 percent, the most in almost two months, after the analyst told CNBC the shares were the “cheapest” among U.S. banks. SanDisk Corp., the largest maker of flash-memory cards, led technology shares higher after Thomas Weisel Partners Group Inc. advised buying the shares.

The S&P 500 rose 2.5 percent to 901.05 at 4:05 p.m. in New York, its best advance since June 1. The Dow Jones Industrial Average added 185.16 points, or 2.3 percent, to 8,331.68. Almost nine stocks gained for each that fell on the New York Stock Exchange.

“We need to have a healthy banking sector for this economy to work properly,” said Keith Wirtz, who helps oversee $19.8 billion as chief investment officer at Fifth Third Asset Management in Cincinnati. “Any positive commentary or news will be good for the banking stocks, will be good for the psychology of the market.”

The Chicago Board Options Exchange Volatility Index, the benchmark gauge of U.S. stock options, slid the most since March. The so-called VIX, which measures the cost of using options as insurance against declines in the S&P 500, tumbled 9.3 percent to 26.31.

S&P 500 Forecast Boosted

Barclays Plc boosted its 2009 projection for the S&P 500 by 23 percent to 930 and said U.S. stocks are poised for a “recovery rally” as the world’s largest economy improves. Barry Knapp, head of U.S. equity strategy at Barclays in New York, raised his forecast from 757, citing the bank’s higher projections for economic growth in the second half of 2009 in a note to clients after financial markets closed July 10.

Goldman Sachs, JPMorgan Chase & Co., International Business Machines Corp. and Google Inc. are among more than 30 companies in the S&P 500 Index scheduled to report results this week. Analysts estimate the group’s profits fell an average 35 percent in the second quarter and will decrease 21 percent from July through September, according to data compiled by Bloomberg.

“It’s going to be a while before we’re confident we’re going to have a strong, sustainable recovery in place,” Treasury Secretary Timothy Geithner said, according to the transcript of an interview with “CNN’s Fareed Zakaria GPS” show broadcast yesterday.

Goldman Rallies

Goldman Sachs climbed 5.3 percent to $149.44, helping lift a gauge of financial shares up 6.5 percent, the most among 10 industries in the S&P 500 and the group’s steepest advance since May 18.

Whitney, founder of Meredith Whitney Advisory Group, upgraded the shares to “buy,” her first such rating on a U.S. bank since she started her own firm. Whitney created the firm earlier this year after correctly predicting in 2007 that Citigroup Inc. would cut its dividend, a call that triggered the steepest drop in the shares since September 2002.

Goldman Sachs may post the largest profit since it set earnings records in 2007 when it reports second-quarter results tomorrow. The company will probably say it earned $2.2 billion, or $3.65 a share, excluding some items in the three months through June, according to the average estimate of analysts surveyed by Bloomberg. The stock may reach $186 from $141.87 on July 10, Whitney said in a note to clients.

‘All Eyes’ on Goldman

“People are questioning the strength of the recovery and whether there is need for a second stimulus package,” said Alberto Espelosin, who helps manage the equivalent of $10.5 billion at Zaragoza, Spain-based Ibercaja Gestion. “All eyes will be on Goldman’s earning’s tomorrow.”

Bank of America, the largest U.S. bank by assets, jumped 9.3 percent to $12.99 after Whitney told CNBC it was the “cheapest” U.S. bank. The shares are trading at less than 23 times profit over the past 12 months, compared with price-to- earnings valuation of 35 for JPMorgan Chase & Co. and 33 for Goldman Sachs. Whitney also told CNBC that she could see a 15 percent rise in the banks she covers.

American International Group Inc. rose the most in the S&P 500, rallying 24 percent to $14.57, after the Commercial Times reported that Primus Financial Holdings Ltd. will make a $2 billion bid for the U.S. insurer’s Taiwan life insurance unit, citing unidentified industry people. The insurer bailed out four times by the U.S. government has gained 54 percent in the past two days, trimming its loss this year to 54 percent.

Best Buy Upgraded

Best Buy Co., the world’s largest electronics retailer, rose 4.1 percent to $34.12. The shares were raised to “outperform” from “perform” at Oppenheimer & Co., which said investors were too quick to dismiss benefits from Circuit City Stores Inc.’s liquidation.

Even though the S&P 500 gained 15 percent in the second quarter for its best rally since 1998, the advance stalled in June, leaving the index up less than 0.1 percent in the month. Bets against the S&P 500 rose to the highest since April last month as investors shorted more shares of health-care, technology and financial companies, according to data compiled by U.S. exchanges and Bloomberg last week.

CIT Group Inc. lost 12 percent to $1.35. The century-old lender that hasn’t been able to persuade the government to back its debt sales, says its demise would put 760 manufacturing clients at risk of failure and “precipitate a crisis” for as many as 300,000 retailers.

Expeditors Drops

Expeditors International of Washington Inc., the manager of cargo ships in 70 countries, dropped the most since May, losing 5.6 percent to $29.88, after saying second-quarter earnings would be 24 cents to 26 cents a share, less than the 30-cent average estimate of analysts surveyed by Bloomberg.

CapitalSource Inc. fell 2.2 percent to $4.42. The loan provider to small and mid-sized businesses said it plans a public offering of about 17.5 million shares of its common stock.

Energy stocks in the S&P 500 advanced 1.6 percent even after crude fell to an eight-week low, dropping 0.3 percent to $59.69 a barrel. Prices are down 59 percent from a record $147.27 a barrel on July 11, 2008.

Treasuries also dropped as investors debated the strength of the U.S. economic recovery. The yield on the benchmark 10- year note rose four basis points, or 0.04 percentage point, to 3.35 percent.

U.S. stocks capped a fourth straight week of declines on July 10, matching the longest losing streak in a year, as consumer sentiment dropped more than estimated and oil’s steepest retreat since January dragged down energy shares. Investors this week will be looking at reports on retail sales and factory production to gauge the strength of the economy after a $787 billion stimulus bill passed in February.
