Stoploss is used liked this :-
  1. For long position:- As you are afraid of price moving downwards here, your stoploss has to be some value below the current market price.
  2. For short position :- Stoploss will be above the CMP.
Please also note that we need to declare two values, i.e. say I have bought RIL @ 100 (just imagine :p) so obviously I want RIL to rise but after this order I may put a stop loss order of RIL @ 95, i.e. I want my maximum loss to be controlled at 5%.
My order will have two values, Stoploss trigger (=95) and Stoploss limit (say 94), so my sell order will not get active till price reaches 95 after which it will automatically go as a sell order with 94 as limit price. Thus I can have any value between 95 to 94, which usually will be 95 for a stock as liquid as RIL. The only danger is when price moves quickly and even crosses my limit price, say in our example price directly hits 93.4 from 95.6 then though my sell order will get active with a limit of 94, but will not get executed and I may end up getting a delivery of this, so band has to chosen judiciously in case of illiquid stocks or in major events like Satyam's fall etc.
Hope this helps.

Thanks BJ...

That cleared a few questions... But i cannot figure on how to put a stoploss using ICICIDIRECT once i have the stocks in my kitty :(

Also,

For short position :- Stoploss will be above the CMP.

what does that mean??? How will u place a stoploss above the CMP while buying even if it a short term/long term?

Yes, i Understand that we have to pace the stoploss everyday, BUT how do we do it? What is the procedure?

Once you have stocks mean two things they are already in your DeMat account and you have allocated them for trading (am talking of ICICI here), else go to stock projection and you can see your stocks about to be delivered (that means those bought in last 72 hours) and sell them from there if BTST is allowed.
So assuming you have figured out and confirmed that you are allowed to sell particular stocks, go to :-
Sell, place a order in cash, put a limit price which represents the maximum loss you can bear and give a stop loss trigger price as otherwise stocks will be sold immediately as market price will be higher than your limit price. This I explained in detail in my last post.
In case you are trying to book some profit, i.e. want to place an order more than current price, just mentioning limit price will do.
Try making few diagrams on blank paper as i remember myself doing this in beginning to understand the process pictorially. ;)
Btw, this all is very neat in ICICI thats what my experience is with them. :) They work very well for liquid (say top 200) stocks.
with regards,
BJ

Here is what i understood:

Suppose u have a stock (XY in this case). If the CMP is 100 and if u want the stock to sell at a max loss of 6rs then u keep a limit of 100-6=94 and then keep a SLTP of around 95. when the share value reaches 95 it will generate a sell trigger and sell at the best possible rate:thumb: . If we do not keep the SLTP the stock will be sold at the current price of 100.:p
