On an year-on-year basis, India's inflation of food prices, as measured by
the wholesale price index or WPI for the week ended January 30, rose for a
third-week to 17.94% from 10.98% for the corresponding week in the
preceding year due to the higher prices of potatoes, pulses, vegetables,
wheat, milk, and cereals.
Index of industrial production (IIP) surged by a stunning 16.8% in December
2009, against the contraction of 0.2% in the same month a year ago, driven
by a robust performance by the manufacturing sector, particularly
consumer durables.

Hindalco Industries, India's largest aluminium maker, hopes to complete Rs
4,900 crore of debt-raising in the next two weeks to achieve financial closure
for Utkal Alumina Refinery, a 1.5-million tonne per annum project in Orissa.

State-run BHEL has bagged a Rs 495 crore order for setting up a 330-MW hydroelectric
power project in Jammu & Kashmir. Of the turnkey contract, it has
been awarded the order for the complete electro-mechanical package.
BHEL has bagged a Rs 1,000-crore contract for supplying equipment to a
hydro power project in Bhutan and has secured a Rs 1,016-crore contract
from Punatsangchhu Hydroelectric Project Authority, Bhutan for the
electro-mechanical equipment package for a 1,200 MW (6x200 MW)
hydroelectric project.
Electrical equipment manufacturer Areva T&D India has bagged two
projects worth Rs 280 crore from the Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd
(PGCIL) for installation of two sub-stations at Punjab and Haryana.
Consumer Durable
State-run Bharat Electronics Ltd (BEL) expects to get a business of over Rs
22,500 crore from the manufacture of electronic warfare (EW) systems for
the Indian armed forces in the next eight to 10 years.

NIIT Technologies has bagged a Rs 228 crore contract from the Border
Security Force for providing software solutions. The company in a filing to
the Bombay Stock Exchange said that the Border Security Force (BSF) has
approved placement of the contract for the Rs 228-crore Intranet Praharl
Project to NIIT Technologies.
Pharmaceutical
Daiichi Sankyo and Ranbaxy laboratories announced plans to introduce
innovator products of Daiichi Sankyo in Mexico through the marketing
division, which was created last year within Ranbaxy's Mexican subsidiary.
Lupin Ltd has received final approval from the US drug regulator for
marketing Amlodipine-Benazepril capsules, used for treating high blood
pressure, in America.
Realty/ Construction
Hindustan Construction Company Limited (HCC) received letter of awards
from National Highways Authority of India, New Delhi to develop three
contiguous sections of approximately 256 kilometer length between
Bahrampore to Dalkhola on NH-34 in the State of West Bengal on Design,
Build, Finance, Operate and Transfer (DBFOT) Toll basis.
Real estate major Unitech plans to launch 12-13 new projects, most of
them residential, in the next few months. The company is also focussing on
reducing debt. The realty firm has already brought down its debt from Rs
10,000 crore to below Rs 6,000 crore.
Construction firm Sadbhav Engineering has bagged a road project worth Rs 1,225
crore in Karnataka from the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI). A
consortium led by the company has bagged a four-laning project in Karnataka.
Electrical and Gulf Projects Operating Company, a part of L&T's
construction division, has bagged orders aggregating Rs 582 crore for four
electrical projects in India and UAE. The company has secured a Rs 155
order from Tamil Nadu Electricity Board for the turnkey contruction of an
environment-friendly multi-circuit transmission line in Chennai. The
second order, worth Rs 90 crore, involves the construction of a air insulated
sub-station at Uttar Pradesh.

With shipment of Ritz to Indonesia starting last month, the country's largest
carmaker Maruti Suzuki will now look for opportunities to export the small car
to South-East Asia and the Middle East. The company has sold over 51,000
units of Ritz since its introduction in the domestic market in May, 2009.
