hi, a couple of VERY amateur queries. Grateful if you could assist (zerodha or someone who's traded with them)

1. I plan to write options (my first shot at it). Is it same as selling first and buying later to square off? (I've bought calls and puts over the last 4 months, always with the intention of squaring off eod. This time i'd like to short and hold it until expiry).

2. Assuming i plan to write 5800 feb CE, what shd be my GL balance? How is this calculated?
eg. i want to write 5800 call; 10 lots - current price being 1.50.

3. Anyth specific i need to do to hold it until expiry?

Thanks!!

Also, suppose the price moves UP to Rs. 10, what will be the margin requirement??

a shortcut i was told by Zerodha is to use "what if" analysis in NOW terminal [press alt + W] and enter your option details, you should get approx margin requirement. If you do it during mkt hrs - you get intraday margin; if you do it after mkt hrs - you get overnight margin requirements.
3. Anyth specific i need to do to hold it until expiry?
maintain margin. plus a little buffer.
and ofcourse, keep an eye on your risk appetite and view of market.

thanks comm! tat was quicker than i expected! ;)

assuming i decide to hold it for the day, can i bring margin ter eod - as i gather from ur post that there are diff margin reqmts for intraday & owise.

to elaborate -

- assuming the intra day margin reqmt is 15k.
- i have 17k balance.
- margin for carryin over the position to next day is 20k.

how do i go abt here as during market hours i wouldn know how much margin to maintain :( :(

well...that's an issue. and you need to call up zerodha to know. ofcourse, you could "ssume" the margin to be the same as the one mentioned for nifty futures in the SPAN margin file. then @EOD check zerodha BO to see how much has been blocked and maybe use the excess to take other trades.

and btw, 3.00 is when the auto-square off starts...meaning, if you fall short of overnight margin, your position would be squared off around 3.00pm.
