China is going ahead at lightning speed. We see news here that a Bridge built by Britishers 100 years back which was passed as safe by NHAI last month, falls with Bus & cars on it, killing several people.

A report by the authority studying railway bridges' durability has come out with a report that 14,000+ railway bridges in India made in British times need urgent attention for rebuilding otherwise they can be deadly. This reconstruction involves a cost of 14,000 crores. The report has been sidelined as pending by the authorities as some people are of the view that Ahmedabad to Mumbai needs a Bullet Train involving 90,000 crores more urgently, to show off to the world the speed of development going on in India. Bullet train will be shown at News channels across the globe but the bridges going down will be covered by the local media only so who cares. Few deaths , some bit of compensation , political bosses showing their condolences , tweeting about their heartfelt emotions, helicopter supervision and the incident buries down in the archives of accidental history.

Rocky Robust,

How apt this post is... My thoughts are the same. Bullet train will cost 1 lac crore... and will benefit a thousands of rich people who will be able to afford the fare, (and who could simply opt for air-travel instead) Meanwhile, in Mumbai people are travelling stamping on each others legs in peak hours... and not only that, people are falling off from the over crowed trains... but who cares? As rightly said, media attention and publicity will come for the bullet train.... Now, who can explain this to politicians - the need of the common man...

Mumbai is also building coastal highways, international finance city etc... This will cost a few thousand crores. But our roads that a Mumbaikar travels on in places is no better than driving on moon craters.... (If NASA wants to test their rovers on moon or Mars mission - they need not spend millions of dollars on that facility. They just need to send the rover on Mumbai roads) Our politicians prefer to spend money on projects that will garner publicity - basic infrastructure and ordinary citizens be dammed.... :(:(:(

The queen of France, Marie Antoinette (who was later beheaded) when being informed that people of the country were starving due to bread shortages, is supposed to have said 'Let them eat cake'

So too is the attitude of our politicians - who splurge tens of thousand of crores collected from the public in taxes and want to splurge on fancy projects whereas the need of the hour is for basic infrastructure. What happened in Gurugram, Banglore, Chennai during rains is a good example of splurging money on project without thinking out the consequences. So 10 years from now we will have a 1% travelling in bullet/maglev trains, while the rest 99% will travel like cattle....
