8 teachers quit in UP after being told not to sing National Anthem on I-Day. According to the 'Manager' of the school, "In the National Anthem there is a line 'Bharat Bhagya Vidhata...' which was misconstrued. 'Bharat' cannot be our Almighty or master of fate and it is 'Allah', who has the power to change our future and no one else,".
In Mumbai, a leader of one religious community has made the 2017 Local Municipal Elections a contest between vegetarians and non-vegetarians stating that that the candidates who promise to shut the city's slaughter houses on eight specific days (during which the community considers holy) will get the community's 18 lakh votes. (Why is he interested in minding the food habits of other people 120 lakh people who are not from his community? Do we want to become like the Arab states who prohibit other people from eating because they are fasting? (Incidentally, Dubai allowed sale of alcohol for non muslims during Ramdan this year, and Pork prohibited for Muslims is freely available in supermarkets for non Muslims all year round)
It is well known in Kerala that the Christian Church influences the direction in which the sizable number of its community will vote.
In rest of India, (and as rightly condemned by PM Modi yesterday) lathi and sword wielding thugs called 'Gau Rakshaks' have taken law in their own hand and assaulted people because they think that these people have eaten beef or slaughtered cattle, a few people have even been killed. (Why not hold them and hand them over to the police?) Akhlakh was killed, a cattle trader was murdered, a muslim women was physically assaulted on suspicion of carrying beef (question is how would they know?), and ofcourse dalits who deal with the carcass of dead cows have been publicly flogged for hours under the nose of police. (Now that dalits have refused to handle the carcass of cows who have died a natural death - the 'Gau Rakshaks' have vanished as there is a stink, and even disease can break out)
In Punjab too, religion is being misused for votes, while the lucrative drug business has full political patronage.
It is high time we understand the dangers of mixing religion with politics and religion with social issues. These cannot and should not be allowed to mix. Those interested in religion, should join madrasas instead of running public schools and telling the students that singing of national anthem cannot be allowed!!!
If the Church leaders want to give political views, they should give up their priesthood and join politics.
If Bajrang Dal, VHP, etc want to spread their idealogy, they too should take up the work of spreading Hinduism fulltime and involve themselves in spiritual work and leave politics to politicians.
RSS in a similar vein should decide what they want to focus on? Nation building or Ram Mandir and upliftment of Hinduism? They too should not straddle across the fence. Same too for Akalis, All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen of Owaisi, Christian Democratic Front etc. etc...
The West has delinked religion from politics (to a large extent) and that has been a reason for the progress and advancement. The Arab/Gulf Countries have linked religion to governing (actually protecting the interest of royalty in the name of religion) and mostly it has landed them in a mess.
We need to realize the dangers of the link between religion and running government. These two do not mix well... And sooner we realize this, the better will it be for the long term interest of the country and us all..... Just my views....
