In case 2, as mentioned in the article, if the holding period increases to 3 years, there is an associated risk with selling equity and buying again.

If you sell equity today and then reinvest it immediately as suggested, you reset your clock. You will not be able to sell that investment for another 3 years (2020) without attracting LTCG tax (albeit, only on profits made since Feb 2017).

If you hadn't sold and the tax structure remains unchanged you could still sell anytime without capital gains tax as long as investments were made before 2014.

ST Sir, incase the LTCG term is extended, then what effect does it have on Tax Savings MF which already have lock-in for 3 yrs?
If for taxsaving fund the holding period is increased to 5 years, investors will book their capital gains.....but if that is not increased, then no effect on ELSS funds.

But if the LT capital gains holding period is increased to 3 years, there will be selling in the market and that will bring down NAV of ELSS funds also .
