Sir,The answer to this is obvious, but the urge to ask is too great.... . For a normal person, not having too great knowledge with tools of tech analysis, and spends not more than one/two hours in tracking market ( being long term invester) how many stocks (Nos) should one invest in.
Hi mkh,

The decision depends mainly on how much capital you have for investing. Then only 50% of that you should invest and keep 50% in cash. Out of this 50% deployable capital you have to decide how many scrips to buy. In the absence of this information it is not right to suggest the investment strategy.

Sir, I have made a very basic binary formula on metastock for your afl type. First of your condition for stock being bullish is that Close should be above 20 days moving average right? For that all three triggers you have mentioned works fine but in my case BHEL and Triveni had a buy signal 2 days back is it the same for you? Also for Anant raj I got a positive direction confirmation too! Waiting for your reply.
Hi Nimish,

If you take Close above 20SMA then both BHEL and TRIVENI triggered Buy on 10-12-09. Therefore, your signals are correct.

But I take Buy condition only if Close is above 20-SMA AND AT LEAST 70% of the bar (or candle) is above SMA line. If you apply this condition then TRIVENI is about 65% above SMA line and BHEL is 68% above SMA line. Therefore they did not figure in the Buy list of 10-12-09 But qualify on 11-12-09. Similarly, ANANTRAJ is in Buy list on 11-12-09 and not on 10-12-09.

Hi Anant,

Thanks for ur quick reply.

As u mentioned abt delay in result, i have little doubt,as the formula above uses the past high values to calculate current value but we can also use eyeball the charts.
but I am also confused and think as whenever there is sell signal(in ur original code), we should sell it and we can buy back it again when it generates buy.we can bypass the 3-4 days waiting stage.
Explanation:- as if there is sell signal and that share is really falling, than we are safe as we sold at high.if sell signal was false, than after some fall it will rise again and we can buy it back again at that time.
Pls correct and suggest me.

one more thing ,can u pls guide me(article or explanation) ,how to choose which share(s) to make our watchlist.

Hi geeks,

We can blindly follow the signals without worrying about the possible whipsaws. But whipsaws cost you in overheads like commisiioon, tax etc. In the long run we may end up in profits whenever we hit a good uptrend. But if we can identify and avoid possible whipsaws the profits will be more. In any case, at the beginning of a range-bound price movement we will not know it and will be trading one or two whipsaws. Once we identify them we avoid and wait for a trend to begin. There is no formula which will tell you that a range-bound condition is starting. Therefore, a couple of whipsaws are part of our trading.

Selecting good stocks for trading does not require any great article. Just simple rules.

1) The stocks should be traded every day: This allows you the freedom of Buying and selling whenever you like. In an emergency, when you need money badly, you can sell even with a loss.

2) They should have good daily volumes, on an average at least 1 lakh daily, if more better. This prevents manipulations and ease of buying and selling. Imagine a stock with a low volume of 10,000 and you want to sell 1000 shares. You may not find buyers.

3) The price should not be too low. Due to minimum brokerage conditions by the brokers you will have to buy a larger number. Generally very low priced shares can be rigged easily, they become illiquid quickly.

4) Fundamentals should be good. This assures you a good growth and confidence in the stock.

5) a good diversified list of stocks covering all major groups of industries. This will give you a balanced portfolio so that even a particular section of industry is not doing well, other section will pull your over all position up. Even within a group, you should have a few different companies so that a diversification within the group is available.
