Vertigo,

Incidentally, I was talking to an owner of Jewellery manufacturing unit. His view was that the industry provides job to lakhs of craftsmen who would not be able to find employment elsewhere. Per se, they do not mind the duty, but are against the 'inspection raj' which they will be subject to....

While I agree that that jewellery business should not be exempt, however, more importantly, the govt. has to work to remove the fear of inspections - which are more often than not (as per my own knowledge) used to harass businessmen and extort money under flimsy pretext.

36th day of jewelers strike, we all know how their business works and how much jewelry is really bought with actual bills, as with this duty they will have to maintain their record and thus do every transaction through a bill they are fighting against it. As usual congress n aap are opposing govn but this is a strong step by govn and they must not rollback. Next in line should be construction sector.

They are in private sector, at least giving tax for half of their transactions, and many getting jobs from these private firms,

Imho, the first step government should act in the loss making public sector, run by tax payers money, accumulating loss every year,

Quite agree....

Air India for one it seems is in the business of losing money rather than flying passengers....:lol::lol: It has some people are not fit to be employed, but no action can be taken against them for fear of union strikes. Were it any other privately owned company, it would have been shut down and buried decades back. But what is happening is that the attitude of some of the employees is impacting negatively many others who are sincere about their jobs and bringing down the low standards lower. Last week there was a news article of an pilot who left the airport on learning that he had to fly to Bhopal inplace of Delhi that he was expecting to go. So in effect, a whole flight of checked in passengers were abandoned on whims of an employee. This is just one example of work culture of some govt. entities and proves the adage that govt. should be in the business of governing and not running business....

They are in private sector, at least giving tax for half of their transactions, and many getting jobs from these private firms,

IMHO we have to change this "At least" mentality, its their duty to give "Full taxes" and not half.
They are anyway going to pass the extra charges to the consumers so i dont understand the logic behind many ppl will loose jobs.. real reason is that their profits will get affected as they will have to provide details of the transactions. And if they really cared about these daily workers then would they have carried their strike for so long(36 days) ?? they have quite deep pockets and thus can afford this.
About inspector raj there was statement issued by govn, that no one from govn will be visiting the shops...i am not sure how its gonna work but roll back is surely not a solution, why not make it transparent ?

Agree with you that they should also work on turning loss making psu into profit making but why shud these process be mutually exclusive ? ?

Air India used to be a great airline, then slowly it was ground into dust when the private airlines arrived on the scene. Business interests influenced various govt. policies and did it down to promote their own interests.

This was more so with airline bosses in the parliament and heading the airline related committees.
